WORKINGTON v TIGERS, PREVIEW

Friday April 07, 2017
SHEFFIELD head to Workington on Saturday aiming to pick up their first away points of the season (7pm).

The Window Centre Tigers lost 52-41 at Ipswich on opening night but responded in spectacular fashion on home shale on Thursday beating Berwick 61-30 – their biggest league win at Owlerton since September 2011.

Team manager Simon Stead says the result was just what his side needed ahead of a tough trip to Derwent Park.

“Workington have put together a really good side this year and we know we’re going to have to be at our best to come away with some points,” Stead said.

“Derwent Park is a big, fast racetrack like we’ve got at Owlerton and the boys are really excited.

“They’re riding high on confidence after our two excellent results against Somerset in the Challenge and Berwick in the league on Thursday.

“If we can get off to a good start and make lives a bit easier for ourselves, then hopefully we could earn some points for our efforts.”

The Tigers will make a late decision on club No.1 Josh Grajczonek. The Australian missed Thursday’s victory over Berwick with a thumb injury sustained for Premiership side Somerset at King’s Lynn on Wednesday.

Grajczonek is going to line-up for the Rebels in their home Knockout Cup clash with Leicester on Friday night, and Sheffield will assess the situation on Saturday morning.

“It’s one of those injuries that you can only judge day-by-day,” said Stead. “Obviously it’s the start of the season and Josh is keen to get on the bike.

“We need to make sure it settles down properly though. What we’ve said to him is to make sure he’s 100 per cent comfortable with everything before committing to a meeting.

“The worst thing he can do is rush back to quickly at this stage of the season because he could potentially cause more damage.

“But we’ll see how he goes, we’ll trust his judgment and we’ll make a decision on a daily basis whether it be this weekend or next week.”
